The Garlic 'Messidor' is derived from an old French variety. The white cloves have a mild flavor and are easy to peel.

For a bountiful harvest, it is best to plant this garlic in the fall in a sunny or partially shaded location.

Climate and Soil Requirements for Garlic

Garlics thrive in moderate climate. They prefer well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Ensure that the planting area receives at least six hours of sunlight each day.

Planting Garlic Bulbs

Timing: Plant  Garlic bulbs in late summer to early autumn, about 6 to 8 weeks before the ground freezes. This allows them to establish roots before winter.

Soil preparation: Prepare the soil by removing weeds, rocks, and debris. Loosen the soil on the surface.

Spacing: Dig small holes, approximately 10 cm deep. If you're planting multiple bulbs, space them about 7 cm apart.

Bulb planting: Place the garlics in the holes, pointed side up. The pointed side is the top of the bulb.

Covering: Gently backfill the holes or trenches with soil, ensuring that the bulbs are covered.

Care During Cultivation

Watering: After planting, water the area thoroughly to help the bulbs settle in the soil. Throughout the growing season, provide water when the soil feels dry, but avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can cause bulb rot.

Fertilization: Before planting, you can incorporate compost or well-balanced fertilizer into the soil to provide nutrients. Additionally, you can fertilize in early spring as the plants emerge.

Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as straw or shredded leaves, over the planting area. Mulching helps conserve moisture, suppresses weed growth, and insulates the bulbs during winter.

Harvest: Once the leaves beginn to dry up, it is time to harvest your garlic. Pull out the cloves and leave them attached to the foliage. Do not clean the garlic cloves. Hang the cloves up and let them mature for a couple of weeks.
